Speaker: Keynote Session Laura Solomon, OPLIN: Web 2.0: An Overview for the Layperson "There's a lot of buzz around Web 2.0 and the online services that have been labeled as such. What are Flickr, del.icio.us, and RSS, and what can they do for your library? Is your library missing the boat or avoiding the hype? Get the low-down on these and other aspects of Web 2.0 in terms that don't require a techie translator." Breakout Session Topics Include: Instant Messaging Reference Services: "This session will show users how they can start their own IM reference services, or how they might enhance their existing service. The session will cover staffing, training, technical issues, and marketing." Chad Boeninger, Ohio University Web 2.0 mashups: "How to use services like Meebo, Facebook, Twitter, FLickr, Del.icio.us, together to create enhanced services." Glen Horton, SWON Embedding Web 2.0 Services into a Library Website: "Learn to embed application like Google Calendar, maps, Meebo, Flickr, YouTube, etc." Glen Horton, SWON People are talking about you... "But do you know what they're saying? You may have spent a lot of money or time on marketing your library, only to have your library's reputation severely damaged by one angry blogger. How can you track this kind of activity, and how can you mitigate negative commentary? Learn what tools are available to help monitor your library's precious online reputation and some strategies to protect your library's brand."Laura Solomon, OPLIN Using del.icio.us as a Collection Development Tool: "Social bookmarking is Delicious! Learn how using Delicious can enhance your existing library collection. This breakout session will show ways that libraries can offer patrons increased access to foreign language learning materials, frequently requested government forms, local and regional information, primary source databases and much more." Laura Dowler, Denison University Blogs, Wikis and Your Library Patrons: "In this session, Laura will introduce the applications of blogs, wikis, and RSS in a library setting. Various online blog and wiki services will be introduced. Demonstration of blogs and wiki creation will be included in the presentation." Laura Cheng, Kent State University ReTAGgr- You're it!: "Retaggr is your interactive Web 2.0 business card. Express your personality, use it as a business tool, for personal branding, or let it bring more readers to your blog. This is a great and easy to promote any existing blogs, wikis or reading lists associated with your library. This hour check out what it does and how to get one started for you. Come check it out-you're it!" Mary Leffler, SERLS Wikis in Libraries: "This session will demonstrate how wikis can be used in the library setting. The session will highlight personal experiences and reflections on using wikis for over three years. Topics include technology, staffing, and lessons learned." Chad Boeninger, Ohio University
Program Description: Meebo. Twitter. Del.icio.us. Wiki. Skype. It may sound like strange martian gibberish but it's the language of Web 2.0 and these days, everyone is speaking it. Fortunately, learning how to use these online tools to enhance your library's services is probably much easier than you would expect. Attend this conference and learn how libraries can harness the creative power of web 2.0 applications to reach patrons in ways never before possible. You don't need to be a techie to attend this event, anyone in charge of implementing or coordinating library services will come away with many new and exciting ideas. Breakfast and lunch provided.
